HMAS Brisbane Sunshine Coast Scuba Diving Reports

Brilliant flat seas and at times, up to 30 metre visibility has had divers excited this past week. The viz dropped to 10-12 metres on the HMAS BRISBANE over the weekend but we still had 15-25 metres viz at Mudjimba and on the Gneering Shoals. Water temp is still a very reasonable 19C. Southern visitors and overseas visitors have revelled in the conditions. We've had a few keen local divers who have also been raving about the conditions plus they've not only heard whales singing but seen them while on the surface too. One sighting was very close to the boat. So those local divers who are waiting for the beautiful winter diving conditions, they are here!!! they have arrived!! These conditions will be missed by those who procrastanate. By 9a.m. the air temp has warmed and with a jacket to wear over your wetsuit while out on the boat, stick a beannie on your head and "Bob's your uncle". Get in and enjoy these calm seas and clear water conditions while they last. Later this week there will be a bit of wind but nothing to worry the diver too much. Dive conditions should settle again by the weekend.

Dive Report June 18

Many have been expecting the water to be dirty for some time, due to the heavy rain we’ve had recently. Well the news is all good as we have been experiencing visibility between 12-20 metres on the HMAS BRISBANE. It did drop to 7-10 metres a couple of days ago but it’s back up to that 15-20 metre range again today. Water temp is around 20-21C so it is time to pull out the thicker wetsuits and get the hood and gloves ready. The south westerlies have calmed the seas and flattened out the swell. It didn’t get up to anywhere near what was predicted and was quite safe and diveable over the past week.

Dive Report June 3

We were only talking about the good weather running out and look what happened. The weekend was a right off with wild winds and really rough seas. So our dive trip to Lady Musgrave Island plus our local trips to the HMAS BRISBANE on both Saturday and Sunday, along with the Gneering Shoals trips we had planned, were all cancelled. The forecast looks promising for the rest of this week with the weekend looking good with SSW of only 4-6 knots being predicted. So hopefully this weekend will help make up for some of the canned dives of last weekend. Paul is currently attending the annual Oceanic Dealer's conference in Coffs Harbour. He will no doubt return home with all of the news about the new innovations in dive gear for the coming summer. Stay tuned for the next date for a dive trip to Lady Musgrave Island.

Dive Report May 29

What a time of year it is to go diving. The water is just crystal!!! 25metres viz yesterday (Tuesday) on the HMAS BRISBANE , 21-22C water temp.and 20 viz on the Gneering Shoals on the weekend. While some are still saying they have been waiting for the weather to settle after that torrid stuff we had to endure at the beginning of the year, I can't help thinking that they are going to miss out if they don't get out diving soon. We've had fantastic weather for diving for the past few weeks. The surface conditions can still have a bit of chop on top on some occassions but generally, even the surface conditions have been great. We certainly don't have that ground swell we can get when the southeasterly wind blows for a few days. We've got a whole winter ahead of us yet, so let those gentle southwesterlies keep puffing gently off our shore and flatten out that sea. No wonder the southern visitors love coming up here for winter when you look at what conditions they get served up down there. We really do live in the best place in Australia.

Dive Report May 20

Clear water is still there to be experienced, you shouldn’t miss it. Conditions have been just perfect for diving. There was some serious south westerly wind on Sunday which meant we had to cancel the a.m. trip to the BRISBANE but that wind soon eased to allow the seas to settle once again. The westerly is a good wind for divers as it flattens the seas and makes for very pleasant surface conditions, particularly when diving close inshore. This is the time of year we start diving spots like “Surprise Reef” etc. It’s ideal conditions for those locations.
