Sunreef and HMAS Brisbane Post Holidays Dive Report,  February 2012

Post Holidays Update and Dive Report

WOW! The Sunshine Coast greeted an enormous crowd of vacationers and holiday travelers this season... and here at Sunreef it was all hands on deck as the entire crew kicked it up several notches to deliver the top quality service and hospitality that all of our divers have come to expect and deserve from us. Those that were able to dive with us over the holidays, "Thank You"... those that couldn't, well you missed out on some amazing diving on the HMAS Brisbane.
Remember you can catch up on some of it by checking out the pictures on our fan page Facebook.com/sunreef. Then Mother Nature kicked in...

After quite a break, we are finally back in the water, as of Friday just gone. The fish life on the HMAS BRISBANE is simply mind blowing. There are just so many schooling fish from fry up to the huge Kingies and Queensland Grouper. Visibility was only 5-8 metres but the action going on with the fish life made up for any lack of viz.Recent heavy rain and strong winds had slowed our ocean diving activities but the GOOD NEWS isowclassdive that these conditions never last forever. In fact oas of the 7th of Feb we were getting reports back in the 15m visibility range!!

The other GOOD NEWS is that during the time of no diving we have been busy with planning and also ensuring that all maintenance is right up to date.
We have also been busy churning through a lot of the academics and pool skills for our divemaster candidates currently undergoing training.
It has also been a time to complete academic requirements for a number of divers who are working through their enriched air, wreck and deep diver courses. So we're all ready to get into diving again.

Rescue Course:

"A challenging yet very rewarding course". "The best course I've done". Are common comments from candidates who have undertaken this course previously.
Learn some skills that will enable you to be of some positive assistance should you be faced with a situation where a diver is in distress or in need of help. It is just as important to learn what not to do so as to preserve the rescuer's safety just as it is to learn what you should do to help those in need. This course covers all of this and more.
This is a very rewarding course that improves your diving skills, safety awareness and boosts your confidence in the water.

Next Course:
Starts Friday, Feb 24th at 4.30p.m.- 7.30p.m approx / Sat 25th & Sun 26th
Prerequisites; Advanced certification, current first aid certificate. There is some pre-course reading to be done.
First Aid Course:
Some home study is required for this course which is set to run on Tuesday evening 22nd Feb. commencing 5.30p.m.

Dive Gear Maintenance:

Have you had your dive gear serviced recently? Many people have as we've had an absolute pile of gear through for service recently. Attached are a couple of pics of what can be going on inside your regulator although all looks "fine and dandy", on the outside. This just emphasizes that fact that dive gear needs regular service.
Dive equipment manufactures recommend having regulators and BCD's serviced annually if you wish to maintain the warranty issued at purchase.
Oceanic Australia offer spare parts for regs and BCDs free of charge- for life. The requirement is that firstly, the product was purchased in Australia from an authorized Oceanic dealer and secondly; that the equipment has been serviced on an annual basis. (Normal labour charges apply however parts are supplied free of charge)
This fantastic offer saves the diver hundreds of dollars over the life of the dive gear.

Equipment Specialty Course:

Would you like to better understand how your dive equipment works and what you can do to better look after it and prolong its life? Here's the chance to get some tips and hints on how to do minor repairs which can save you money in the long run. Then the PADI Equipment Specialty Course is for you. This course is informative and helpful in a practical sense. It is not an equipment technician course although we will strip down a regulator to show its components and how it works.
Next Course: Wednesday 21st March

Overseas Dive Holidays:

Sunreef has 3 trips to idyllic locations, planned for this year.
Borneo: 4th - 13th May 2012
Walindi: 8th - 14th July 2012 Fully booked
Uepi: 2nd - 9th Sept 2012

Although the Walindi trip is fully booked, there are still spaces available on both the Borneo and the Uepi trips. Why not treat yourself to a great diving adventure? Use the links above to our Travel Holidays page on the web site and Book Your Dive Vacation Today!!?

Lady Musgrave Trip: Mar 16th - 19th

(Use the link above to view details on our web site)
Get in early to book onto this trip. Last trip in January we had almost the whole the boat... this time we have reserved the ENTIRE BOAT for Sunreef. These spots fill quickly, especially now with the great communication and images from some of the divers that have gone! The picture here is the gang from our January trip.
BOOK IN NOW!

Freediving Course: (Breath-hold diving)

This is a discipline that has created a lot of interest and is a fast growing sport in its own right.By participating in one of these courses, divers are finding that they can double their breath hold time underwater and extend their depth capabilities after just one pool session.

(watch this short video shot during one of our classes in November. The latter portion of the video is free diving on the HMAS Brisbane... You want to see this!!) There is an academic session with a big emphasis on safety aspects of the sport. This is followed by a pool skill session. These newly acquired and practiced skills are then transferred to the ocean where you will be taken for a freedive (breathhold dive) on the HMAS BRISBANE. APNEA Australia instructor, Bjorn Neilson, himself an accomplished and experienced breath hold diver will be the instructor on this course.

Next Course: Mar 31st & Apr 1st

As you can see, with so much going on here at Sunreef that there is something for every level of diver. To check on courses, trips and events use our Dive Calendar and mark it as a "Favorite". If you ever can't find what you're looking for drop us a line or give us a call so we can help make your dive, course or trip everything you want it to be!

The Good Weather Continues for the Sunshine Coast

Octopus on the HMAS Brisbane Oct 30 2011I know, Iknow! We haven't communicated in several weeks due to software upgrades on our web site. Now with that out of the way communication will be weekly again and you should see many new features in the future on our (your) web page. As always, if you haven't already, "Like" our facebook Fan Page and keep tabs on our adventures; www.facebook.com/sunreef. How do you like our Octopus? Tell us on Facebook...

We have a continued good weather pattern moving all the way through into the early part of next week. We have only a few spots left for this Saturday but still only about half full for Sunday so contact us and book it!

SANTO REPORT OCT 2011

We planned, we waited, we waited and finally it was time to take off on our Santo adventure. With a gang of 16, we headed to Aore Resort, Espiritu Santo in Vanuatu, to “set up camp”. We dived with Santo Dive to see the USS Tucker, Aore Wall and Tutuba and with Alan Power to dive that great wreck, the President Coolidge and a couple ventured to have a look at Million Dollar Point.

The water was brilliantly clear with over 30 metres viz on more than one occasion. It was a warm 28C, and the service we received, particularly on the Coolidge with Alan Power’s guides, was fantastic. The day trip to Champagne Beach and the Blue Pools is just a must do. The beach and the Blue Pools are just indescribable. Picturesque with sand that feels like power under your feet just doesn’t do it justice. A must do on your next visit to Santo.

All in all, great diving, great conditions, great people on the trip, a lot of laughs as always, some fantastic food and a reluctant return to reality after we experienced all of the above. Till next time….. Be sure to check out some of the pictures in our photo album on facebook.com/sunreef

In 2012 we have Borneo, Uepi or will it be Walindi? Maybe all 3. Start planning now!!!

HMAS Brisbane Dive Report 21 - 28 September 2011

Glass Like Water and Amazing Clarity

Latest Coast Weather ForecastWhat magnificent conditions. Don’t miss them!!!! We’ve been experiencing 15-25 metre viz and absolutely flat, mirror sea conditions lately. It doesn’t get any better than this. Divers are coming back to the dive centre just raving about the dives they have been having. We’re diving every day this week and over the weekend. Check out our adventures on www.facebook.com/sunreef.

Unfortunately this good weather also brings out the illegal fishermen and a young diver managed to get a large gang hook stuck deeply into her finger yesterday while diving the HMAS BRISBANE.

This was the result of illegal trolling around the wreck and hooks getting caught on our transit line. Thanks to Denice for her help with the situation and forfeiting her dive to take care of Stef.

These conditions look like continuing. There may be a bit of a spike in the wind strength on Wednesday but there’s no swell to really pose a problem for us. After that, it will quieten down again to give us more of what we’ve been having.

Diving with a buddy is a necessary safety procedure while scuba diving. It enhances your dive because 4 eyes are better than 2, and it is someone to share the experience with under the water and again on top after the dive. Also, in case of any problem that may arise, your buddy should be right there to assist. It is also a necessary procedure to keep your eye on your buddy. Don’t rely on them keeping up with you, look and check on a regular basis. These are basic skills that should be emphasised during open water training however we see all too often, divers who don’t pay enough attention to their buddy. Be aware of where your buddy is in case you or they need assistance. If that need should arise, there is no time to go swimming off to look for him or her. They should be close enough to reach within a couple of kicks of your fins.

Matt and the gang of 19 are off to Malascapua in the Philippines to dive the Thresher sharks in just under 2 weeks time and then it’s my turn to head off. For me it’s Santo with a group of 15 of us in the middle of October, can’t wait.

Dive safe,

Greg and the Sunreef crew.

HMAS Brisbane Dive Report 14 - 20 September 2011

Maximum of 10 knots and under a metre of swell!

Spring has Sprung!!! and just in time for the School Holidays. Latest Coast Weather Forecast

The past week has brought us multiple days of incredible diving with awesome conditions below and above the water. With the swell down, the surface conditions, along with the warm sun are pure bliss for divers. Check out our facebook site, www.facebook.com/sunreef  which now has our (www.youtube.com/sunreefdive), YouTube Channel published on a tab on the left, for a few updated videos and pictures of this last week. Along with our Dive Event Calendar Tab, it's a great way to keep in touch with whats happening... if your not a member already, just click "Like" on the Sunreef Fan Page and keep informed.

Looking into the week ahead weather conditions are going to be perfect. Forecast is for under a metre of swell with winds maxed out at around 10 knots. This could not be more opportunistic for a night dive... which we have planned for this Saturday the 17th. What an opportunity if you're on holidays at the Sunshine Coast.

Contact the Sunreef Team with any of your questions and Book in Today! Keep an eye on us as we will be announcing our 2012 lineup of International Trips soon.

HMAS Brisbane Dive Report 18 - 25 August 2011

We are certainly enjoying the best of winter diving at the moment.Latest Coast Weather Forecast

What a week we’ve had. Some fantastic diving, many great encounters with marine life on the HMAS BRISBANE. Water clarity has hovered between 10 to 20 metres and water temp fluctuating between 17C and 19C.
Check out our facebook site, www.facebook.com/sunreef  for the vision Matt took with a little Olympus digital camera on Saturday.
Mudjimba Island and the Caves on the Inner Gneering Shoals both delivered viz up to 15 metres through the week.
Reports from the Tonga trip keep flooding in. Some very excited divers returned from that trip. Those I have spoken to are still on a high after their close encounters of the whale kind.

We still have one spot available for the Santo trip in October and keep your ears to the ground for our overseas trips for 2012. We should have details available soon.
