AIDA Freediving, or breath hold diving is a truly unique activity. Sunreef is running freedive courses. Free diving is perfectly suited to Australia's stunning coastline. The ability to dive below the surface on a single breath of air is a rewarding experience that everyone should be able to enjoy. More free dive pictures here.
AIDA Stage A Freediving Course
The AIDA Stage A course is designed to be an introduction to freediving for students who are already comfortable in the water. You do not have to have any freediving experience - the 2 star course is great for the complete beginner as well as those who have a bit of experience already. The AIDA Stage A course will help students develop the skills and knowledge to freedive safely.
The course is two day duration and run over a weekend. During the weekend you'll spend half a day in the classroom, half a day in the pool and then we go out into the sea to put it all into practice.
In the classroom, we'll cover a range of topics including equipment, breathing, depth & pressure, safety and the various disciplines in freediving.
When we get to the pool, our first session of static apnea (holding your breath) will teach you proper breathing before and after a breath hold, how to train safely and effectively, and we'll teach you how to deal with rescue scenarios.
After the static session we'll look at dynamic apnea (swimming horizontally) and cover the equipment to use, proper finning style technique, body position and once again we'll go over rescue scenarios.
The following day we will take our new skills into open water, where we'll learn efficient duck diving, buoyancy, equalisation, vertical swimming, buddy supervision, and of course safety and rescue procedures. After learning these skills you'll have all the tools available to you to be diving safely and comfortably to around 15-20m.
Student/Instructor ratios are kept small at 4:1 to ensure that the safest environment is given, as well as the best learning opportunities for the student.
After you successfully complete the course you will receive an AIDA Stage A Freediver certification card which is recognised all around the world. The range of people that take this course is amazing - snorkellers, underwater photographers, surfers, spearfishers, freedivers, journalists on report, scuba divers and even the occasional escape artists! Without fail, everyone who does the course surprises themselves with what they can achieve.

"The water has always been my refuge. When I'm in the water nothing else matters, its the perfect mixture of excitement and calm. My aim is to help others experience what Freediving can give which no other sport can. Freediving has become much more than a sport, its become a way of life."
"I currently reside in Cairns North Queensland and teach courses in the calm, cool waters of the tablelands Crater lakes or the crystal clear waters of the Great Barrier reef."
